Juan Carlos Osorio watched helplessly from the bench as his team was thrashed, 7-0, by Chile in the Copa America quarterfinals. Now, the Mexico national team manager will be charged with pushing his team out from the wreckage of that defeat.
Mexico Football Federation general secretary Guillermo Cantu announced on Thursday that Osorio would remain the head coach of the national team. At a press conference on Thursday, Cantu announced that the federation had “decided to continue with the Osorio project”.
“We are all responsible for what happened,” Cantu said. “These losses help you better see the reality. The result of this Copa America was a failure.”
“How we go from being a good group to being a team depends on how we strengthen ourselves, and not just on the field,” Cantu added. “We all have responsibility and whoever comes here must be convinced they belong on a national team.”
Prior to the 7-0 loss to Chile, Osorio had gone 10 games unbeaten as Mexico manager, a run which include a run to the top of Group C in Copa America play.
